A question I was asked recently, was why I chose the left hand path. Why did I choose the path of ‘black magick’? over ‘white magick’?
White magick traditionally refers to the practices of witches and healers who work with the powers of nature to achieve change in their lives and the lives of others. They work with the elements of spirit, earth, wind, water and fire. Practitioners of white magick often disapprove of black magick and in particular hexes and working with Demonic entities. They believe that black magick is at best a selfish pursuit and at worst a dangerous and evil business. So why black magick?
My answer to this may be considered controversial and I’m sure not every Occultist would agree. I believe that all magick is, in essence, alchemy. It is a means with which we can shape the world around us, events, actions, thoughts and fortunes, to our will. I do not believe in the ‘threefold rule’ that everything we send out to others will come back to us threefold. I do not believe in leaving matters to karma. What I do believe, is in being true to my own moral code. I think of curses or hexes as a form of violence. For me, it’s acceptable only as a form of self defence. If someone has done me harm or is planning to attempt to harm me or a loved one, I will use baneful magick against them. This is not only because it is deserved, but because sometimes it is the best way of exhausting any lingering feelings of hurt, hate or resentment the person has caused. The best curses are ones in which the full extent of the Witch’s emotion is exhausted in ritual, allowing him or her to emotionally cut chords with the person and events that have caused anguish.
My style of magick is often described as ‘Chaos Magick’. This means that I incorporate many different forms of magick from different cultures and teachings. I do not approach spirits with a sense of them being good or evil, angels or demons, I think of them all as ancient Gods and Goddesses, or Daemons. The Demonic Gatekeepers I have worked with have given me protection, healing and a sense of unconditional love. They do not wish to harm people indiscriminately, and they have no use nor desire for human souls. The idea of ‘selling one’s soul’ is complete fantasy. They wish to teach us ancient secrets and wisdom to allow us to reach a greater level of enlightenment as a species. They ask only that we approach them with honour and respect.
All magick can be considered blasphemous from an Abrahamic religious point of view, because in essence we are saying that we will not simply trust in ‘God’ to shape our lives. We are taking matters into our own hands and using powers to shift and mould reality to our will. This can be to heal ourselves or loved ones from ill health, to win a court case or to prevent someone from bullying or harassing us or our loved ones. Black magick is not selfish or evil, it is simply all encompassing. We work without discrimination against entities, without limits on ourselves and without fear and shame. We approach magick with respect and awe. I can guarantee that there are Witches who use it for unfair and immoral reasons, hurting those who have done them no wrong. I trust that while the threefold rule may not apply, the spirits cannot be fooled and are aware of what is fair. More times than I can remember, people who have wronged me have suffered greatly, without me putting any curse into effect. The spirits teach us constantly and there is no greater lesson, than treating others as you wish to be treated, and approaching the powers of magick with respect and a pure heart.
I hope this explains a little more about my path and why I choose to be a black witch.
